Acalypha virginica, also known as Virginia threeseed mercury or Virginia copperleaf, is a plant found in the eastern United States. It is commonly found in open woodlands and along riverbanks, and is known to thrive in disturbed habitats such as agricultural fields. This herbaceous annual can grow up to 50 cm tall and produces small greenish flowers in the summer and fall. It is similar to another species, Acalypha gracilens, but can be distinguished by its hairy pistillate bracts without glands. While Acalypha virginica is considered to be globally secure, it is listed as a special concern species in Connecticut and is thought to be extinct in Maine. Overall, it is a common species found in a variety of habitats, but becomes less common at the edges of its range.
