The tree grows to a height of 10–15 m and has a trunk diameter of up to 40 cm. The leaves are simple, alternate, and oblong-lanceolate. The flowers are small and yellowish-green. The fruit is a drupe, yellow when ripe, about 2 cm in diameter.
Garcinia afzelii is a species of small to medium tree found in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon and Guinea. It is sometimes referred to as "bitter kola", although this name is more properly used for G. kola. It grows to a height of 10-15 m, with a trunk diameter of up to 40 cm.
