Greenwayodendron (Verdc.) is an African genus in Annonaceae (Annona or custard apple family) recognised by World Plants (2023) and listed by POWO (2024), with a small species assemblage sometimes treated conservatively as about five species (World Plants, 2023). Its distribution spans the Guineo-Congolian rainforest belt from Nigeria and Cameroon to Gabon and the Congo Basin, with outlying taxa in coastal East Africa and the Albertine Rift (Couvreur et al., 2022). The type species commonly adopted in catalogues is G. polycarpum (Verdc., 1956) (POWO, 2024; World Flora Online, 2024).

Vegetatively the genus is recognised by small to caducous stipules and aromatic leaves that are alternate, simple, and often glabrous or lightly pubescent, differing from the often larger, broader leaves of closely allied genera. Flowers are axillary or ramiflorous, solitary or in small pairs, with three sepals and six petals in two whorls; the inner petals are valvate and typically smaller than the outer, and monodominant, 2-celled anthers are a salient feature (Chatrou et al., 2012). Carpels are free, and the fruit is a multi-follicle with fleshy monocarps that contain ruminated endosperm and a relatively large, globose to ovoid seed, consistent with the family’s distinctive seed anatomy (Chatrou et al., 2012).

Diversity is centred in the Congo Basin, where the genus shows pronounced local endemism; species occur in lowland to submontane rainforest up to about 1200 m, often on well-drained soils in relatively sheltered understorey settings (Couvreur et al., 2022; Heinig et al., 2021). Biogeographically, Greenwayodendron forms part of the Ambavioideae clade that is largely African, and appears to track the mosaic of forest refugia during Pleistocene climate fluctuations (Chatrou et al., 2012).

Pollination is consistent with the beetle syndromes observed across Annonaceae, and dispersal is typically by frugivorous vertebrates that handle the fleshy monocarps (Chatrou et al., 2012; Gottsberger, 1999). In central African forests, Greenwayodendron contributes to the understorey woody flora but remains poorly represented in quantitative forest inventories (Baker & Holl, 2009). A chromosome base number is not securely documented.

At sectional or subgeneric rank the group is not widely formalised. It is placed within the ambavioid grade of Annonaceae, close to Cananga, and is accepted as distinct from that genus in contemporary treatments (Chatrou et al., 2012; Couvreur et al., 2022; WFO, 2024). Species boundaries have been revised around G. polycarpum and G. suaveolens; in some checklists G. suaveolens has been treated as a synonym (Chatrou et al., 2012), whereas GBIF (2024) lists both, reflecting ongoing taxonomic divergence (Couvreur et al., 2022).

Horticulturally the genus is rarely cultivated; it is primarily of ecological interest as a component of African rainforest understoreys and is seldom reported as invasive (Chatrou et al., 2012). Conservation status varies by species and region, but many taxa are underrecorded across protected areas, and habitat loss in the Congo Basin poses a persistent threat; targeted field surveys and refined taxonomy are needed to inform management (Couvreur et al., 2022; Heinig et al., 2021).
