Xylopia acutiflora is a small tree belonging to the Annonaceae family, growing up to 15 m high. It has brown pubescent twigs and elliptic-elliptic-lanceolate leaf blades. The flowers are solitary and the fruit has a green-reddish exterior and scarlet endocarp. This species is native to West Africa and can be found in lowland forests. In Ghana and among the Ehotile people of Akanland, the root extracts of this tree are used as a sexual stimulant and as a chewing stick. The seeds are crushed and used as a spice, while the wood is used to make various tools such as canoe paddles, spears, and bows.
