Smilax tamnoides, also known as bristly greenbrier, is a plant native to North America, specifically the United States and Canada. It can be found in various states, from Ontario and New York to Texas and Florida. While it has been referred to as Smilax hispida in some publications, the correct and older name is Smilax tamnoides. This plant is a climbing vine with thorny stems that uses other plants for support. Its small green to brown flowers grow in clusters and produce blue to black fruits without the typical waxy coating found in other species of the genus. In the United States, Smilax tamnoides is considered a special concern species and is believed to be extinct in Connecticut.
