Smilax officinalis is a flowering plant found in southern Central America and northwest South America. It is a vine that can grow up to 50 meters and is known for its use in traditional medicine and as an ingredient in sarsaparilla soft drinks. Its roots are collected and used for their medicinal properties in countries such as Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador.
