Ripogonum scandens, also known as supplejack, is a common rainforest vine native to New Zealand. It is a climbing liana with hard but flexible stems that starts its life as a sappy stem searching for a support. Once it finds a shrub or tree to cling onto, it grows upwards to access sunlight and develops branches and leaves. The vine flowers from December to February and produces clusters of red berries throughout the year. It can grow up to 5 centimeters per day during summer, allowing it to climb high into the forest canopy. The plant was first collected by botanists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander during explorer Lieutenant James Cook's first voyage to New Zealand in 1769. It has traditional uses among the Māori people and is found in the North and South islands of New Zealand, as well as some offshore islands. Supplejack can grow in a variety of soil types and habitats, but requires strong branches and trunks to climb. It is consumed by various bird species and faces threats from introduced species and mammals. Sooty mould and Ctenopseustis obliquana larvae are common pathogens and predators of the supplejack vine.
