Xerophyllum tenax, also known as bear grass, soap grass, quip-quip, and Indian basket grass, is a North American plant in the corn lily family. It is a perennial herb with long, narrow leaves and fragrant white flowers that bloom in a tall stalk. This plant is found in western North America, from British Columbia to California and east to Wyoming, in subalpine meadows and coastal mountains. It is an important part of the fire ecology in its native regions, as its rhizomes can survive fires and it is often the first plant to sprout in burned areas. Xerophyllum tenax has been used by Native Americans for weaving baskets and as a food source, with deer, elk, and bears also consuming parts of the plant. It is a common myth that this plant blooms every seven years, but it actually depends on environmental conditions.
