Tulipa fosteriana is a species of tulip that is native to the Pamir Mountains and surrounding areas in Central Asia. It can grow up to 40-55 cm tall and has large red flowers with dark violet anthers. This species was first described by British botanist Walter Irving in 1906 and is named after British Iris expert Michael Foster. It is part of the subgenus Tulipa and is resistant to tulip breaking virus. T. fosteriana is well-suited for garden cultivation, as it can naturalize easily and come back year after year. It is also used in breeding to create new cultivars. This species can be found in Afghanistan and Tajikistan, growing on rocky hillsides at an altitude of 1,500 m above sea level.
