The Carolina lily (Lilium michauxii) is a species of lily native to the southeastern United States, ranging from southern Virginia to the Florida Panhandle and eastern Texas. It blooms from July to October and can grow to 3½ feet tall with 3-4 inch flowers. It is the only fragrant lily east of the Rocky Mountains and its petals bend backward and are spotted in colors ranging from yellow to red for the background petal color and from red to purple to brown for the spots. It is the official state wildflower of North Carolina and is named after the French botanist André Michaux.
