Lilium chalcedonicum is a European species of Liriotypus lily, native to Tuscany, Greece and Albania. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and is a perennial, herbaceous plant, which can usually reach a height of 35-70 centimeters. It has yellowish-white bulbs and green stems covered entirely by lanceolate-serrate leaves. The flowers are red, up to 10 cm long, and bear a heavy scent. It is native to the Balkans but can also be found in Tuscany. It thrives in cool areas, mainly in glades of deciduous and boxwood forests of mountainous regions as well as meadows on calcareous, rocky soils at an altitude of 600–1700 meters. It has been cultivated since at least the 16th century and is depicted in a Minoan fresco dating back 3,500 years. In the Victorian language of flowers, orange lilies stand for happiness, love, and warmth.
