Fritillaria recurva, also known as the scarlet fritillary, is a perennial plant found in the western United States. It is a bulb-forming herbaceous plant that grows in dry, open woodlands and chaparral at elevations between 300-2,200 meters. It is most commonly found in the northern half of California, but can also be found in parts of Oregon and Nevada. The plant blooms in spring, from February to July, with scarlet red flowers that are checkered with yellow on the inside. Its name, "recurva," refers to the backwards bending of its petals. This plant can be distinguished from other Fritillaria species by its unique color and shape, but hybridization among species can make identification challenging. It is similar to the rare F. gentneri, but can be differentiated by its branching style and shorter nectary glands.
