Sassafras tzumu, also known as Chinese sassafras or Cha mu, is a deciduous tree native to China. It can be found in various forest habitats at altitudes of 100-1900 meters. The tree can reach heights of up to 35 meters and has yellow-green wood that turns gray or brown as it matures. Its leaves are gray-green, ovate or obovate in shape, and may have two or three lobes. The plant produces yellow flowers and blue-black and white waxy fruit. Unlike its North American counterparts, Sassafras tzumu can have both male and female flowers on the same tree. The tree's bark is durable and used in shipbuilding and furniture making, while its medicinal properties are used to treat rheumatism and trauma. The bark also contains a high concentration of safrole oil, making it valuable for commercial and potentially illicit purposes.
