Persea palustris, also known as swamp bay or swampbay, is a small tree or shrub commonly found in the Southeastern United States and the Bahamas. It is closely related to Persea borbonia and is typically no more than 40 feet tall. The bark is separated into scales and the leaves are green with prominent brownish or reddish-brown hairs on the undersides. This species prefers wet, peaty soil and is often found in swamps and coastal areas. However, it is highly susceptible to the fungal disease known as laurel wilt, which is spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle. This disease poses a significant threat to the species, making conservation efforts important.
