in the Laurisilva forest of Garajonay National Park, La Gomera, Canary Islands
Ocotea foetens, also known as til or stinkwood, is an evergreen tree in the Lauraceae family that can grow up to 40 meters tall. It is commonly found in the laurisilva forests of Madeira and the Canary Islands. Fossils of this species have been found on Madeira Island. The tree is endemic to Macaronesia and is rich in essential oils, giving it a strong odor when freshly cut. It is not commonly used as an ornamental plant. The leaves are leathery and glossy, with small gland-like depressions on the underside. The flowers are white with green and yellow accents and bloom from June to August. The fruit is a hard, fleshy berry with a single seed. Ocotea foetens is found in laurel forest habitats at altitudes between 400 and 1400 meters. It is considered sacred by the Bimbaches, the original inhabitants of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, and is associated with legends about providing water for survival. A replacement tree was planted in the same location as the original Garoé tree,
