Genus Mezilaurus in Family Lauraceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Mezilaurus Kuntze ex Taub. (family Lauraceae) comprises approximately 25 species of evergreen trees ranging across the lowland rainforests of the Neotropics, with the greatest richness in the Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. The type species, Mezilaurus itauba, is presently accepted in the Kew Plant List (POWO, 2024). The genus consists of medium‑sized to large trees bearing alternate, simple, entire leaves that are usually coriaceous and often bear a fine indumentum of dendritic hairs; stipules are absent. Inflorescences are paniculate and axillary, bearing numerous small, apparently unisexual flowers with six tepals, nine fertile stamens that dehisce via valvate pores, and a single superior ovary containing one basal ovule. The fruit is a fleshy drupe, a diagnostic feature for the genus within Lauraceae (POWO, 2024).
Diversity peaks in the Amazonian terra firme forests, where several narrowly endemic taxa are confined to particular river catchments or foothills, and a few species extend into the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Typical habitats range from lowland rainforests up to about 800 m elevation, and the trees are characteristic of primary forest, occasionally persisting in secondary stands but never becoming invasive (POWO, 2024).
Pollination in Mezilaurus is inferred to involve small beetles or thrips, as is common in core Lauraceae, although detailed observations remain scarce (Chanderbali et al., 2001). Seeds are likely dispersed by birds or mammals attracted to the succulent drupe; no well‑supported base chromosome number has been reported for the genus.
Molecular phylogenies place Mezilaurus within the core Lauraceae clade, consistently recovered as sister to Ocotea (Li et al., 2020). Recent studies have transferred several former Endlicheria species to Mezilaurus, reflecting a recircumscription of the genus, while some authors retain Endlicheria as a separate genus (Rohwer, 2000). The genus is currently accepted without formal subgeneric sections (POWO, 2024).
Several species provide valuable timber; M. itauba is harvested as “itaúba” wood, prized for durability and used in construction and furniture (FAO, 2022). The genus is occasionally cultivated as ornamental shade trees in tropical horticulture, but remains largely restricted to its native range.
Many species are threatened by ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation, and several are listed as vulnerable in national red‑lists. Targeted field surveys and expanded protected‑area networks will be essential to ensure the long‑term persistence of the genus.
