Machilus nanmu is an evergreen tree found in southern China, specifically in Sichuan and northeastern Yunnan provinces. It is a threatened species due to habitat loss caused by overcutting. This slow-growing tree can reach heights of 10 to 40 meters and has a straight trunk with a diameter of 50 to 100 cm. Its wood is highly valued for its resistance to decay, density, and attractive colors, making it popular for construction and furniture making. It was even used in the construction of the Forbidden City by the Ming emperor Zhu Di and for making boats.
