Cryptocarya rigida is a small tree or shrub that is native to high rainfall areas in north eastern New South Wales, Australia. It was first described by Carl Meissner in 1864 and is commonly found in rainforest or eucalyptus ecotone areas. It can reach a height of 10 meters and has grey bark with simple and entire leaves that are green on the upper surface and pale on the underside. Cream flowers appear from June to October and the fruit is a shiny, bluish/black drupe with a single seed. To aid in seed germination, it is recommended to remove the fleshy aril from the fruit. While it was once thought to be extinct in the Illawarra region, it has been allegedly seen there in 1818 by Allan Cunningham. Cryptocarya rigida can be found from Wyong in New South Wales to the border of Queensland at the McPherson Range.
