Cryptocarya nova-anglica, also known as the mountain laurel, is a rainforest tree found in eastern Australia. It is typically found in cool temperate rainforests at altitudes above 1,100 metres. Its natural range extends from the upper Hastings River to the border of Queensland. This tree is often found in the understorey, along with other species such as the Antarctic beech and possumwood. Its name, "nova-anglica," refers to its occurrence in the New England National Park. The tree can grow up to 20 metres tall with a trunk diameter of 45 centimetres. Its leaves are simple and ovate-lanceolate in shape, with a shiny dark green color on top and a dull grey color underneath. The tree produces small creamy green flowers in December and January, and its fruit matures in March and April. The fruit is a black drupe with a pointed tip and should be cleaned before planting the seed.
