Cryptocarya erythroxylon, also known as pigeonberry ash, rose maple, or rose walnut, is a large rainforest tree found in the Barrington Tops of New South Wales to the Gladstone area of Queensland. It is one of the largest laurels in Australia, with mature trees reaching up to 35 meters in height, and a record-breaking 57 meter tall tree in Murray Scrub near the NSW-Queensland border. Unlike most trees in the genus Cryptocarya, which are found in tropical or warmer temperate regions, this species is able to thrive in cooler areas with frost and occasional snowfall. Its trunk is often buttressed and its grey or white cylindrical shape makes it a distinctive feature in the rainforest. The leaves are 6 to 13 centimetres long, with a white underside, and the tree produces small cream flowers in early summer followed by black fruits in the cooler months. Germination is easy after removing the black aril.
