Eremophila occidens is a unique flowering plant found only in Western Australia. It is a slender shrub with hairy branches, light green leaves, and purple to deep violet flowers that bloom in early Spring. This plant is limited to the extreme west of Western Australia and is usually found in calcareous soils in open heath or between sand dunes. It is classified as "Priority Two" by the Western Australian Government and is listed as "Threatened" under the Australian Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. The species was first described in 2007 and its name, occidens, comes from the Latin word for "west" or "in the direction of the setting sun". With its restricted distribution and unique characteristics, Eremophila occidens is an important and valuable plant species in Western Australia.
