Buddleja saligna, also known as the false olive or bastard olive, is a plant native to South Africa with a wide distribution. It is typically found in ravines and against outcrops, and can be found at elevations below 2000 meters. The species was first described and named in 1809 by Willdenow. This evergreen shrub or small tree can reach heights of up to 15 meters and has a trunk diameter of 40 cm. Its bark becomes furrowed with age and its branchlets are quadrangular and winged. The leaves are opposite, narrow and elliptic to linear in shape, and can vary in size from 1.2 to 15 cm long and 0.2 to 3 cm wide. The flowers are cream or white with a reddish orange throat and have a honey-like scent. They appear in large terminal heads in the spring and summer. The wood of this plant is of high quality, but rarely found in sizes suitable for furniture. Buddleja saligna is hardy and frost resistant, and can be grown in well-drained soil. It is also tolerant of drought and is classified as USDA zone 9.
