Buddleja grandiflora is a shrub that is native to the marshy fields and river margins of southern Brazil, as well as adjacent areas of Argentina and Uruguay. It was first described and named in 1827 by Chamisso & von Schlechtendal. Unlike most other South American members of the genus, this species is hermaphroditic rather than dioecious. It has subquadrangular branches covered in a white tomentum, with narrow lanceolate leaves that are 5-10 cm long and 1-2.5 cm wide. The yellow inflorescence is 5-15 cm long and has two orders of branches, each bearing pairs of cymes with 1-6 flowers. The corolla is tubular and 10-12 mm long. One unique feature of this species is that its seeds have buoyancy cells, allowing them to float and survive flooding. Buddleja grandiflora is closely related to several other species, including B. cestriflora, B. stachyoides, B. tubiflora, and B. hatschbachii. Currently, this shrub is not known to be cultivated.
