Orobanche hederae, commonly known as ivy broomrape, is a parasitic plant without chlorophyll that is totally dependent on its host, ivy. It is native to central and Northern Europe and has been observed in the US at the University of California, Berkeley. It grows to 60 cm (2 ft) and has yellowish to purplish stems, cream flowers with reddish-purple veins, and 10-12 mm (0.39-0.47 in) capsules. It flowers from late April to mid July. Greek physician Dioscorides wrote that it can be eaten raw or cooked and Russian and Northern folklore describe it as highly medicinal.
