Melampyrum pratense, also known as common cow-wheat, is a plant in the Orobanchaceae family. Its seeds have a special structure called an elaiosome, which attracts wood ants. These ants help disperse the seeds by carrying them back to their nests to feed their young. This plant is often found in ancient woodlands, as the ants rarely carry the seeds long distances. The species name, pratense, means "of meadows" in Latin. Melampyrum pratense is an important food source for the caterpillars of the heath fritillary butterfly. In traditional Austrian medicine, the herb has been used for treating rheumatism and blood vessel calcification, both internally as a tea and externally as a pillow filling. However, it can also be parasitized by a type of oomycete called Peronospora tranzschelinana.
