Fraxinus profunda, also known as the pumpkin ash, is a species of ash tree native to eastern North America. It is found in bottomland habitats such as swamps, floodplains, and riverbanks. This tree is threatened by the invasive emerald ash borer, which has caused significant damage to ash trees in the region. Pumpkin ash is a member of the olive family and is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate trees. It is known for its swollen trunk bases, but not all trees exhibit this feature. This tree is important for various species of Lepidoptera and is a food source for animals like deer and birds. It is also used by humans for lumber and other products. Due to the emerald ash borer, pumpkin ash is considered critically endangered in Canada and has experienced population declines in its range.
