Chionanthus retusus, also known as the Chinese fringetree, is a deciduous shrub or tree found in eastern Asia. It can grow up to 20 meters tall and has thick, fissured bark. The leaves are ovate to oblong-elliptic and have a hairy petiole. The flowers are white and form in panicles, while the fruit is a blue-black drupe. This plant is popular in Europe and North America as an ornamental tree due to its beautiful white flowerheads. In Japan, a grove of seven mature Chionanthus retusus trees has been designated as a natural monument since 1923 due to their yearly white blooms.
