Genus Micranthemum in Family Linderniaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Micranthemum (Michx.) represents a small genus of approximately 14 species within the family Linderniaceae, distributed primarily throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, with centers of diversity in South America and the Caribbean (Fischer et al., 2013; Ruhfel et al., 2016). This aquatic and semi-aquatic genus typically inhabits marshes, swamp margins, and shallow waters, with some species tolerating temporary emersion. The type species is Micranthemum orbiculatum Michx., the original species upon which Michaux established the genus (Fischer, 2004).
Distinguishing features include herbaceous habit with prostrate to ascending stems, opposite or whorled leaves lacking stipules, and cymose inflorescences with small, typically white or pale pink flowers (Fischer et al., 2013). Characteristic four-lobed corollas with short tubes, bicarpellary ovaries with axile placentation, and globose to ovoid capsules containing minute seeds further define the genus (Ruhfel et al., 2016). The indumentum varies from glabrous to sparsely pubescent, and leaf morphology ranges from orbicular to lanceolate depending on species.
Species richness concentrates in South America, particularly Brazil and neighboring countries, with several endemic taxa restricted to specific river systems or wetland habitats (Fischer et al., 2013). The genus demonstrates typical floodplain ecology, with many species displaying amphibious growth strategies that allow survival across varying water levels (WFO, 2024). Some species form dense mats in shallow aquatic environments, while others occupy muddy substrates along stream margins.
Pollination biology remains incompletely documented, though small floral morphology suggests insect vectors. Dispersal mechanisms include water-dispersed seeds and vegetative propagation through rooting stem fragments (POWO, 2024). Chromosome counts are sparse but suggest a base number of x=15, though this requires additional verification (Fischer, 2004).
Recent molecular phylogenetic work has clarified relationships within Linderniaceae, confirming Micranthemum's placement and revealing some re-circumscription needs (Ruhfel et al., 2016). The genus appears monophyletic but shows morphological convergence with related genera, leading to historical taxonomic confusion with Hemichaena in some treatments (Fischer et al., 2013). Alternative circumscriptions by early taxonomists have largely been resolved through modern systematic approaches (APG IV, 2016).
Several species possess ornamental value in aquascaping, particularly M. umbrosum and M. cf. tweediei, though commercial availability remains limited. No species hold significant agricultural or timber importance, and invasiveness concerns are minimal (WFO, 2024).
Conservation assessment reveals data gaps for many species, with habitat destruction from wetland drainage representing primary threats. Species occurring in endemic freshwater systems require particular attention as aquatic habitats face increasing pressure from development and climate change (POWO, 2024).
