.
Pinguicula hemiepiphytica is a carnivorous plant species native to the cloud forests of Oaxaca, Mexico. It was first identified in 1991 and is one of the few epiphytic species in the genus. It grows 8-20 cm tall and has two forms, distinguished by leaf type. In the summer form, the leaves are arranged in dense whorls around the base of the stem and are covered in mucus, which traps small insects. The winter form has far more leaves, but they are shorter and narrower and lack glands. During the summer months, individuals bear up to three solitary flowers. The species is believed to be hummingbird pollinated and can also self-pollinate and reproduce vegetatively. It is cultivated for use in the nursery trade and is sometimes hybridized with other species for sale to hobbyists. It is also illegally poached and traded for biological uses, and the Zapotec use it to treat “culture-bound syndromes”.
