Thymus praecox, also known as mother of thyme, is a species of thyme native to central, southern, and western Europe. It belongs to the genus Thymus and is classified under the Serpyllum section. This species has various subspecies and cultivars, including 'Doone Valley', 'Minus', and 'Pseudolanuginosus'. It is commonly used as an ornamental plant and groundcover in gardens and pots, and is drought tolerant when established. However, it has also escaped cultivation in North America and is considered a weed or invasive species in some areas. Thymus praecox has a strong scent similar to oregano and can be used in cuisine. It is also known for its chemotypes, which vary in essential oil composition and can be found in different geographical populations.
