Scutellaria mexicana, also known as bladder sage or paperbag bush, is a shrub in the mint family that is easily recognizable by its unique calyx lobes that form small bag-like structures around its fruits. It is commonly found in sandy and gravelly areas in the southwestern deserts of North America, including California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Mexico. The plant has a distinctive growth pattern, with rigid stems and small, ovate leaves that are drought deciduous. Its flowers are 2-lipped and come in pairs, with a white upper lip and a dark violet lower lip. As the flowers age, the calyx expands into its characteristic bag shape, which helps with seed dispersal. The plant is named after Mexican astronomer José Salazar y Larregui.
