Salvia villosa is a herbaceous perennial native to the Mexican states of San Luis Potosi and Coahuila. It is a low mounding plant with blue-green leaves that are covered in short hairs, giving it its specific epithet, villosa, or "hairy". The inflorescences are 8 inches (20 cm) long, thin and wiry, with verticils that have two to six bright violet-blue flowers. The flowers are very small, less than 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) long, with a white beeline on the lower lip that leads into the throat. It blooms from spring to autumn and grows best in dry areas with little or no frost at approximately 4,000 feet (1,200 m) elevation.
