Among the English herbal tradition, Culpeper’s Complete Herbal (1653) records that the dried leaves of Salvia verbenaca, called “wild clary,” were infused as a mild tea to relieve flatulence and stomachache. In the Cyclades, Greek islanders have long prepared a decoction of the aerial parts for urinary complaints; Mavroidis and Karamanoli (2016) documented this practice among shepherds on the island of Naxos, noting that the leaves are boiled for ten minutes and the liquid drunk after cooling. Sicilian farmers, as reported in the 2014 field study by Garofalo et al., make a fresh‑leaf poultice for minor cuts and bruises, crushing the leaves and applying the mash to the wound.
Contemporary herbal compendia echo these folk practices. The Plants for a Future database (2024) notes that the dried leaves are commonly used in a tea for indigestion and flatulence, and that a fresh poultice of crushed leaves is applied to bruises and minor skin irritations. In addition, historical records from the 19th‑century Italian pharmacopoeia (Biblioteca del Farmacista, 1887) mention a tincture made by macerating 100 g of fresh leaves in 500 ml of 45 % ethanol for two weeks, yielding a liquid traditionally taken in small doses for respiratory congestion.
One simple way to experience the traditional use is to brew a mild leaf tea. Measure 2 g (about 1–2 tsp) of dried aerial parts, place them in a cup, pour 200 ml of just‑boiled water over them, cover and let steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. The resulting infusion can be sipped up to three times a day. Safety note: the tea is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, and excessive consumption may cause mild drowsiness; individuals taking blood‑pressure‑lowering medication should use it cautiously.
The plant’s pharmacology is linked to well‑studied constituents. Analyses of Salvia verbenaca show high levels of rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, and flavonoids such as luteolin and apigenin glycosides; the essential oil fraction, as reported by Boulamtat et al. (2018), contains 1,8‑cineole (≈15 %), camphor (≈10 %) and β‑caryophyllene (≈8 %). These compounds are known for antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity, which plausibly accounts for the traditional digestive and wound‑healing applications. Modern research has confirmed antioxidant effects in vitro, and the herb is now marketed in Europe as a specialty tea and a 1:5 (v/v) ethanol tincture, while many rural families in the Mediterranean continue to use fresh‑leaf poultices and decoctions in daily health routines.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Essential oil obtained from fresh flowering aerial parts, used as a fragrance and flavor material; dried leaves and flowers used as a culinary spice/seasoning.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Essential oil employed as a flavor component (e.g., in liqueurs, confectionery, beverages); dried leaves and flowers used to flavor vinegars and desserts. Flavor profile typically floral–herbal with linalool/linalyl acetate dominance.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Essential oil used in perfumes, cosmetics, and toiletries; its high linalool/linalyl acetate content contributes a sweet, floral–herbaceous note and favorable volatility for fragrance formulations.
Properties relevant to use:
Aerial-part essential oil content around 0.3–0.5% (dry weight basis); main constituents commonly linalool and linalyl acetate (together often >60% of the oil), providing a low odor threshold and soft, persistent floral character suitable for both perfumery and food flavoring.
Standards and regulation:
Essential oil quality and characterization follow ISO 3515 (clary sage oil, Salvia sclarea); in Europe the material is subject to the EU Flavouring Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 and the EU Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. National food additive listings and maximum use levels may apply.
