Salvia uliginosa, also known as bog sage, is a flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family native to southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It was named by botanist George Bentham for its typical habitat of swamps and marshes. This herbaceous perennial can grow up to 3-6 feet tall in one season and has thin stems and yellow-green lance-shaped leaves. Its bright azure-blue flowers with a white beeline in the throat bloom in whorls from summer to fall. The plant is known for its blue pigment, cyanosalvianin, which is a complex formed of six molecules of anthocyanin and flavone and two magnesium ions. Salvia uliginosa has become popular in gardens and public landscapes for its beautiful flowers, ability to grow in various conditions, and its role in providing habitat for pollinators. It has also received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
