Salvia tiliifolia, also known as lindenleaf sage or Tarahumara chia, is a fast-growing annual plant in the Lamiaceae family that is native to Central America. It has spread to other regions such as South America, Africa, and China, and has been domesticated for thousands of years. The Aztecs and Tarahumara people have traditionally used chia seeds as a food source, and it is still consumed today for its high nutritional value. The plant can grow up to 1 meter tall and has distinct ovate leaves with pubescent surfaces. Its inflorescence can be simple or paniculate, and its dark blue corolla is 5-10 mm long. Salvia tiliifolia has become naturalized or invasive in several countries, including Mexico, the United States, Ethiopia, South Africa, and China, due to its strong aroma and ability to outcompete native plants.
