Salvia scutellarioides is a perennial plant that is native to the Andes Mountains in Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. It grows at elevations between 3,300 to 10,000 feet and thrives in mild climates with year-round moisture. Despite being described in 1817, it is still not commonly found in horticulture. The plant has trailing stems that can reach up to 1.5 feet in length and is evergreen. Its leaves are deltoid and average about 3.5 inches in length and width, with raised veins on the back and a light covering of hairs on both surfaces. The plant produces sparse but striking blue flowers that are 0.5 inches in size, with a small hairy green calyx. Flowering occurs from late summer to late autumn, with inflorescences growing opposite each other and reaching 6-8 inches in length.
