Salvia ringens is a hardy herbaceous perennial that is native to the southern and eastern parts of the Balkan Peninsula. It can be found growing on Mount Olympus at altitudes up to 6,200 feet, as well as in scrub and coniferous woodland between 1,600 and 4,200 feet. This plant was popular in English gardens before 1913, but was later forgotten until it was rediscovered in the late 1990s. It forms a clump of pinnately divided leaves and produces tall flowering stems with violet-blue flowers from summer to autumn. The flowers are large and showy, held in a small calyx covered with hair and glands. The name "ringens" refers to the wide open two-lipped flowers.
