Salvia reptans is a perennial herb that is commonly found in the mountains of Trans-Pecos in Texas, as well as in Mexico and Guatemala. It prefers dry stream beds and gravelly soils. This plant was introduced into horticulture in the 19th century and was previously known by different names, alluding to its slender leaves. The name "reptans" refers to its creeping growth habit. There are two forms of this plant - one that is commonly grown in gardens and has lax or decumbent stems, and another that is native to western Texas and grows upright. The variety "glabra" can also be found growing wild in Texas. In gardens, Salvia reptans can reach a width of 3 feet or more, with thin black stems that can make a groundcover. The leaves are narrow and mistletoe-green in color, while the flowers are small with blue corollas and dark calyces.
