Salvia longispicata is a perennial shrub native to southwestern Mexico, known for its unusual dark purple flowers and upright growth habit. It can reach up to 5 feet in height and 4 feet in width in just one season. Its name, which means "long spikes", actually refers to the clusters of short flowering spikes that resemble small ears of corn. This plant has been valued by salvia hybridizers for its unique qualities and has been used to create popular cultivars such as 'Indigo Spires' and 'Mystic Spires Blue'. Its small dark purple flowers bloom from summer to late autumn and are surrounded by pale green calyces. Unlike other species of Salvia, its flowers do not rise above the foliage.
