Salvia littae is a perennial herb that is native to the Mexican state of Oaxaca and grows at high elevations. It typically grows in shaded areas at the edge of moist oak or cloud forests. The plant can reach heights of 4-6 feet and widths of up to 6 feet, forming thickets if left alone. Its leafy stems easily root when they touch the ground and its medium-green leaves are rounded and grow profusely. The plant produces inflorescences up to 1 foot tall with brilliant magenta flowers that are covered in hairs. The upper lip of the flower is upright while the lower lip is wide open, with a unique curled appearance. The small calyx of the flower is a bright lime-green, making it even more attractive.
