Salvia lanceolata is a perennial shrub that is native to a small area on the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. It grows in sandy ground at sea level and on dry hills and flat ground up to 1000 feet elevation. The plant was first described and named by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1791, but it was collected and described by Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg nearly twenty years earlier. Thunberg gave the plant the specific epithet "nivea" in 1800, referring to the color of its foliage. Despite this, Lamarck's name had precedence due to the rules of nomenclature. Salvia lanceolata is a shrub that can grow up to 3 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide, with woody stems and evergreen, lanceolate leaves. Its flowers are an unusual rosy brown color and bloom from May to November. The leaves have a light fragrance similar to lemon pepper and are commonly used in South African cooking, particularly with fish.
