Salvia karwinskii, also known as Karwinski's sage, is a perennial shrub found in the mountain forests of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. It is a popular honey-producing plant in these areas, but is not commonly seen in private gardens. However, it can be found in gardens at Strybing Arboretum, Huntington Botanical Gardens, and University of California Botanical Garden. In California, it can grow up to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, while in the wild it can reach up to 12 feet tall. The flowers are 1 inch in size and come in shades of brick-red, rose-red, and scarlet. They are carried on long racemes and have a showy dark-red calyx. The leaves are evergreen, rough, and have light cream-colored hairs on the underside. Overall, Salvia karwinskii is a beautiful and unique plant that adds color and texture to any garden.
