Salvia hirtella is a flowering plant in the sage/mint family that is native to the Ecuadorian province of Cotopaxi. It can be found on both sides of the equator, but is limited to higher altitudes in the Andes mountains. This evergreen shrub can reach up to 2 feet in height and has glossy, triangular leaves that are about 2 inches wide and long. Its flowers are a vibrant orange-red color and grow in groups of twelve on a 1-foot inflorescence. The plant is known for its dark purple hairs and glands on the calyx and inflorescence stem, which give it its name "hirtella" meaning hairy. The calyces of the flowers remain long after blooming.
