The plant is also used as an ornamental, and is grown in gardens in temperate regions.
Salvia hians is a perennial native to the Himalayas from Pakistan to Bhutan. It was described in 1830 by John Forbes Royle, a British botanist living in India. It forms a mound reaching 0.6 to 0.9 metres (2 to 3 ft) tall by 0.6 m (2 ft) wide, with broadly ovate and basally cordate to hastate leaves. The purple, violet to deep blue, or rarely white corolla is up to 50 mm long and 15 mm wide at the throat. In India, the roots of S. hians are used as a stimulant and in Nepal they are reportedly used as a remedy for dysentery. It is also used as an ornamental and is grown in gardens in temperate regions.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment. |
Requires Light or Surface Sowing: These seeds need light to germinate and should not be covered with soil or only very lightly. They are often very small and sown directly on the surface of the growing medium. |
