Salvia herbanica is a rare and endangered plant found only in the Canary Islands. It grows in the mountains of southern-central Fuerteventura at elevations of 250 to 400 meters. In 2004, there were only 212 known plants in the wild, spread out over ten locations. However, the plant's habitat is shrinking due to being preyed upon by herbivores such as domesticated goats and sheep, as well as wild rabbits and squirrels. Only about 50 of the plants are currently safe from predation, while the rest are in poor health. Salvia herbanica is a shrub with dark green leaves and purple flowers that grow in clusters on the end of the branches. It is an important plant to protect due to its critically endangered status.
