Salvia caymanensis, also known as the Cayman sage, is a short-lived perennial plant that is native to Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. It was believed to be extinct for almost 40 years until it was rediscovered in 2007. The plant was thought to have disappeared after Hurricane Ivan in 2004, but conservationists were hopeful that it may reappear if there were still viable seeds in the wild. A reward of 1000 CI$ was offered for any living examples of the plant, which led to its rediscovery by an island resident who spotted it while driving on the Queen's Highway. After the initial discovery, 300 individual plants were found and 18,000 seeds were collected. Salvia caymanensis grows up to 100 cm tall and has ovate-lanceolate leaves that are pale and tomentose on the underside and dark green on the upperside. This rediscovery is a significant event for the conservation of this rare plant species.
