Salvia cardenasii is a rare and endangered perennial herb that is native to Bolivia and can only be found in three small populations. Its limited distribution makes it susceptible to damage from grazing animals. This plant grows on grassy slopes near rock outcrops at high elevations. It has dark violet to greenish stems that start off lying on the ground before growing upright to a height of 8 to 25 centimetres. The leaves are oblong to narrowly elliptic and range from 2.7 to 6.5 cm in length and 0.5 to 1.7 cm in width. The inflorescence is a simple terminal raceme with 1-4 verticillasters and has a blue corolla that measures 8 to 9 mm.
