Salvia canescens, also known as hoary sage, is a perennial plant found in the Caucasus mountains. It was first described in 1831 by Russian botanist Carl Anton von Meyer. However, the English botanist George Bentham mistakenly applied the same name to a different species, which was later corrected. In 1992, another Russian botanist reduced the species Salvia daghestanica to a variety of Salvia canescens. This variety has white leaves covered in hairs and produces royal purple flowers in the summer and autumn. The flowers grow in whorls and are held above the foliage on inflorescences that can reach up to 1 foot in length.
