Salvia africana is a perennial shrub that is native to the coast of the Cape Provinces in South Africa. It can be found on coastal dunes and rocky hills up to 600 meters in elevation. The plant grows up to 60-90 cm tall and has round, grayish stems that release a strong scent when touched. Its leaves are a soft grey-green color and have an elliptical shape. The inflorescences, or flower clusters, can reach up to 30 cm in length and contain 2-6 flowers in each whorl. These flowers range in color from pale blue to pale violet or pink. The plant was originally named Salvia africana caerulea by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, but this name was later corrected to Salvia africana due to a naming error. The incorrect name, Salvia africana-caerulea, may also be used.
