Salvia aethiopis, also known as Mediterranean sage or African sage, is a perennial plant that is considered a noxious weed in the western United States. It is native to Eurasia and was likely introduced to North America through contaminated alfalfa seeds. This plant is a problem for rangelands and pastures as it is unpalatable to livestock, disrupts native floral communities, and can become a nuisance due to its persistent dried stems. To combat this weed, the weevil Phrydiuchus tau is used as a biological pest control agent. In a study by Boya and Valderde, a new compound called aethiopinone was isolated from the root of Salvia aethiopis. This plant can be controlled through mechanical, chemical, or biological means, with the use of the weevil being an effective option.
